The working paper ‘Listening to lived experience: What needs to be done to end homelessness in Australia?’ was a key output from Skye’s PhD research project ‘Learning from living experience: Can consumer participation help end homelessness in Australia?’

The larger PhD project explored the ways in which the involvement of people with lived and/or living experiences of homelessness might contribute to the end of homelessness in Australia. The project also attempted to achieve epistemic justice in homelessness research through the use of participatory research methods and the involvement of a lived/living experience advisory group.

This research project included:

  • Collaborative development of project scope and content, drawing on the collective experiences and expertise of the research team.

  • Focused conversations (qualitative interviews) involving responsive co-analysis with people with experiences of homelessness and the homelessness services sector.

  • Collaborative analytical processes and authorship with people with lived/living experiences of homelessness.

  • Collaborative identification and initiation of actions in response to the research findings (including the establishment of the Lived Experience Led Homelessness Collective).

Following the publication of this working paper, co-authored with people with lived/living experiences of homelessness, Skye decided to withdraw from the larger PhD project. This decision was a direct response to the findings of this project, as outlined here.

Skye continues to collaborate with many of the lived/living experience advisors and participants in this project, prioritising capacity building work to directly increase the influence of people with lived/living experience of homelessness int he decisions that affect their lives.

This includes mentoring, coaching, and supportive collaborations for people with lived/living experience of homelessness to pursue their own goals.
