New training packages on their way!

Thanks to everyone who completed the Housing Justice Needs Survey!

The survey responses along with other sector discussions have led me to prioritise the development of two new courses:

Trauma Informed Practices for Social Change and Communication that Gets Results.

These training packages are developed with housing justice work in mind but are suitable and/or easily modifiable for other contexts.

Trauma Informed Practices for Social Change (aka Housing Practice with a Trauma Informed Lens)

Almost everyone who experiences homelessness or housing precarity has experienced additional trauma. People working in homelessness, social housing, and housing justice can impact, and be impacted by, these trauma experiences.

Trauma Informed Practices for Social Change will support learners to develop resources for working reflectively and in consideration of their own trauma, the trauma of others, and the systemic contributors to trauma. This course emphasises practices that can contribute to personal wellbeing, social care, and social change.

This training session is suitable for frontline staff, managers, advocates, and any other people working with housing justice and/or social change issues.

At the end of this session, learners will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics of trauma informed systems and practices

  • Recognise the barriers and enablers of trauma informed systems and practices

  • Develop trauma informed practices that support personal wellbeing and social care

  • Develop trauma informed practices that contribute to social change

Communication that Gets Results

Housing justice work involves complex communications with diverse stakeholders. People working in housing justice need to be able to communicate and collaborate with people experiencing multiple marginalisations, multidisciplinary teams, and formal structures and systems.

Communication that Gets Results will support learners to develop communication skills for clarity, connection, and collaboration. This course emphasises self-awareness, strategies for building trusting and respectful relationships, and the skills required for solutions focused communications.

This training session is suitable for frontline staff, managers, advocates, and any other people working with housing justice and/or social change issues.

At the end of this session, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of communication that supports clarity, connection, and collaboration

  • Understand reasons for diverse communication styles and preferences

  • Identify their own communication style and preferences

  • Recognise the barriers and enablers of good communication

  • Develop communication strategies that support clarity, connection, and collaboration
